Kvíčala’s Triptych comes from a series of paintings from 1987–1988 entitled Wallpapers, in which the artist adopted the size and formal appearance of standard wallpapers. Ornament has become a key element in Kvíčala’s paintings from the second half of the ’80s till today, providing him with an opportunity to examine the repetitive order. ”Ornament is no longer a crime, but simply one of the possibilities of composition and it is the discovering of variants, deviations from the strict form that seems to be a very interesting option – ornament may be that order on the background, from which individual, personalized variants are derived respecting its dominant rhythmic qualities. Despite all its radicalism the present work of Petr Kvíčala is clearly steeped in tradition, and namely in the local tradition, one of understanding the painting as a lyrical order (and after all in the order of the landscape as the point of departure for the order of the painting), but it is articulated in a way which is in accord with the period, but most of all new and original.” Jiří Valoch.
