Jan Merta is one of the most respected contemporary painters, whose work is represented in leading state and private collections in the country and abroad. Beaker, from 1990–92, was created during the first stage of Merta’s painterly work in which he experimented with rendering solitary objects. Austere, flat paintings, reducing the object to its outline, intently examine the narrow space on the edge of abstraction and depiction, painting in itself and its subject. The following works reveal an interest in the inner space of depicted things, the best known work from this period being Green Vault from 1991–94.
