Gual Jaume Sabartes was a Catalan sculptor, poet, journalist and collector. He was a cousin of the painter Joan Miró. He maintained a correspondence with Picasso for 30 years, and on his return to Europe in 1935 was invited to become Picasso's business secretary when the latter briefly abandoned painting to devote himself to automatic writing.
