Mančuška Ján 1972–2011
Figure II., 1995/1996
oil on canvas frame, glass, 49,7 × 36,5 cm, signed. PD J.M. 95
Ján Mančuška is one of the important representatives of the emerging artistic
generation that formulated its programme at the turn of the new millennium,
defining itself against the previous tendencies of the eighties and nineties
years. In 1996 the group Headless Horseman was formed, whose members
Ján Mančuška, Josef Bolf, Tomáš Vaněk and Jan Šerých soon established themselves
on the Czech scene as distinctive authors, although each later pursued different
direction. The artists of the group were united by their interest in relating to specific
stories and events growing out of the local context. Ironically
they responded to the tradition of domestic DIY and commented on local realities.
During this period, Ján Mančuška created a series of paintings reminiscent of
Vladimír Kokolii's training, but in which he managed to find his own distinctive
expression. Abstract minimalist paintings made up of subtle drawings
are characterised by a sharp colouring. Although at first glance they appear
abstract, they are always based on a concrete motif, whose outlines and shapes are
only hinted at in the painting.
In the following period, which unfortunately ended prematurely, the
Mančuška focused on conceptual manifestations, installations and work with language
and established himself on the Czech and international art scene as one of its
key figures.
