Karel Ebner, master mark KE, top restorer and goldsmith
from the late Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods. In 1901-1907 he studied at the
School of Arts and Crafts under Stanislav Sucharda. His extensive own
work includes high quality jewellery and the realisation of foreign designs - mainly
Marie Křivánková. After 1922, Ebner devoted himself to jewellery in the style of
Art Deco style (and exceptionally in the so-called national style). About the excellent reputation
of his workshop, among other things, is evidenced by the fact that in 1938, the
scepters of the rector and deans of four faculties of Masaryk University in Brno (according to
designs by Václav Rada and Ladislav Bartoníček). Three dozen of his works are
can be found in Czech public collections. Jewellery with Czech garnets is frequent,
almandine, carnelian or mother-of-pearl. Among Ebner's jewellery, a special place is occupied by
Ebner's original jewellery inspired by folk motifs holds a special place. It is in fact the only
expression of the so-called national style in the field of jewellery. These jewels, marginally
mentioned in some of the older literature, were created in a very limited way
as exceptional originals, e.g.: a brooch in the national style with two doves
and Czech garnets in the collection of the National Museum in Prague.
