Kokolia Vladimír *1956
Bohemian Central Highlands I, 1977
Signed on the reverse V. Kokolia, Bohemian Central Highlands 1977, oil on canvas,
74 × 80,5 cm, frame
The offered paintings of the Bohemian Central Highlands from 1977 represent a unique
example of the early painting work of Vladimír Kokolii (b. 1956) from the period of his
study years at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. Although the painting was
in the second half of the 1970s, painting was on the decline in Czech art,
Kokolia devoted himself consistently and honestly to the medium of painting
through the traditional category of plein air landscape painting. He explored
the bearing of this genre on contemporary art, coming to terms with its legacy
and depicted the typical scenery of the hilly Bohemian landscape with cottages, the
cottages, but he also inserted humorous details, such as a typical Czech gravel car,
anchoring the scene in a specific contemporary context. The earthy, colourful
colouring and compositional schedule demonstrate Kokoli's sovereign talent as a painter,
which he fully developed in the second half of the 1980s, when his
his work to painting abstract three-dimensional structures.
