Face mask - monkey

Democratic Republic of Kongo, Bembe, 1980's, wood, leather, mask consists of two part connected with belts, grooving at the upper part, h. 37 cm. Dancers of ALUNGA society are wearing these monkey masks in order to save the harvest before baboons. These masks are worn with special costume ASAMBA made from raphia fibres.
