Japan, 1920–1925, varnished wood, base metal, silk, paper, glass beads, rattan, ritual figures used for HINA MACURI ritual (Feast of Little Girls), emperor and empress on black lacquered wooden bases, brocade woven ceremonial costumes from the Heian era, removable heads GOFUN with expressive features, highly polished white, fine painted faces with so called speaking open mouths, glass eyes, black silk hair, emperor wears court hat (KANMURI), empress wears metal crown (HOKAN) with glass jewels, height of the pair 45 cm Imperial Pair was made in the Taisho era, synchronous to European Art Deco style. Rarely available in this size and quality.
