J. Svoboda (born in 1938) studied at the School of Art and Design in Železný Brod in 1953–1957. In 1966–1969 he worked in the Glass Cutting Studio at the Institute of Artistic Crafts in Prague and in 1970–1986 he was the head of the glassworks of the Institute of Artistic Crafts in Škrdlovice near Žďár nad Sázavou. Under his leadership, glass production was maintained at a high level and became an important centre of artistic glass craft. In the 1970s, glass symposiums were regularly held here. In addition to studio metallurgical glass and fused glass sculpture, Svoboda also worked on a number of architectural projects from 1974. He created over thirty works of art, glass walls, light objects, stained glass and other artefacts. As a professor and teacher, he headed the Glass Studio at the Academy of Arts and Crafts in Prague from 1986 to 1990. In 1990 he founded his own glassworks in Karlov u Škrdlovic. He has received numerous awards and prizes for his glass work. His work is represented in prestigious international collections such as the Corning Museum of Glass, New York, USA, the Kunstmuseum für Kunst und Gewerbe in Hamburg and the Kunstsammlung der Veste in Coburg. In the Czech Republic, the collections of the National Gallery in Prague, the Moravian Gallery in Brno, the Museum of Glass and Jewellery in Jablonec nad Nisou and many others.
