The photographic work of Jan Svoboda has an irreplaceable place in Czech art of the second half of the 20th century. Svoboda's photographs are characterised by a concentrated message, in which the medium of photography itself, the essence of photographic language and the possibilities of purely artistic expression are newly formulated and reflected through simple and very plain scenes. The motifs of tables with tablecloths, rolls of paper, a pile of salt and others are essentially directed towards a free abstract artistic record in which space, light, composition and a certain conceptual work with the properties and nature of the photographic medium play the main role instead of the traditional work with photographic narrative. The set of 16 photographs of the same format was taken by Jan Svoboda during the preparation of the monograph at the end of his life. The back of the book contains information for the printer from the book's graphic designer Milan Jaros. They document both the author's selection and the creation of the publication itself.
